Exodus 3:17 English Standard Version

and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.”’

Exodus 6:1-3 English Standard Version

6 But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”

John 16:13-15 The Voice 13-15 The Spirit of truth will come and guide you in all truth. He will not speak His own words to you; He will speak what He hears, revealing to you the things to come and bringing glory to Me. The Spirit has unlimited access to Me, to all that I possess and know, just as everything the Father has is Mine. That is the reason I am confident He will care for My own and reveal the path to you.

Acts 2:3-4 The Voice 3 Then a flame appears, dividing into smaller flames and spreading from one person to the next. 4 All the people present are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in languages they’ve never spoken, as the Spirit empowers them.

These Scriptures establish the theological language for Pentecostal Holiness folk. Early holiness/pentecostal folks used Canaan Land language to explain Salvation, Sanctification, and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is deliverance from Egypt (symbolic of sin) and reinforced by the Pharaoh’s defeat (symbolic of the Devil’s defeat), this Promise Land (symbolic of life in heaven) reveals a new life, restoration of God’s Image in us lost in the Fall, a inward power to walk and maintain Canaan life through the Spirit, and Truth to guide us daily as it sanctifies us wholly. John and Charles Wesley used this language in poems, hymns, teachings, and sermons. A larger question asked, “Did Wesley believe in tongues and the gifts of the Spirit? Does the Pentecostal Holiness Church receive our teaching on the Holy Spirit from Wesley or Azusa Street? Both! It takes a bit of untwisting some history to understand this.

We will next explore the roles of Spiritual gifts in establishing a holy life, the ability to live daily in holiness, and the call to love perfectly!
